I can’t believe it is January 7th already! Things are pretty quiet in our stores as most of the kids have gone back to school. Hopefully this weekend they will be out in droves as we launch our newest Bearemy’s Kennel Pal dog, Jack Russell Terrier. Dog launches are very popular especially since the opening of the movie Marley and Me and later this month there will be the cool movie, Hotel for Dogs. I can’t wait to see it.
One of the most important reasons our dogs are so popular besides being so BEARY cute is that they give back! Whenever we sell a BKP dog, We contribute a portion of the sale to a fund to help domestic pets—like dogs and cats. We donate to shelters, to animal rescue centers and to animals in distress like when the hurricane displaced so many dogs and cats. Animal groups from all over contact us with a grant proposal and because of the money we have from the sale of the dogs, we can say YES!!
At BABW and BABV we have always known how important pooches are. We actually have lots of dogs that come to work everyday at World BearQuarters in St. Louis. We have known for a long time that a dog lick can make a hectic day a lot better. There is Milford ( a one-of-a-kind), Willie (black lab), Smash (pug), Tucker (mixed heritage) Mocha (little fluff ball) and Nina (shi tzu). Willie is a former companion dog . Milford is the oldest at nearly 8, 56 in dog years and Nina is the youngest.
Milf has the official title of Chief Executive Dawg (CED) and he even has business cards. One of his main responsibilities is to send a welcome letter to all new pooches who come to BABW. You know, how not to bark or beg and that all dogs must stay with their owners…the usual. All the new dogs appreciate knowing the rules so they can come daily. Milf sheds a lot –he wants us to know he has been by to see us! We have a local pet grooming salon that comes and does a pick up and takes dogs to the doggie spa every month. They all come back fresh and happy and with a new seasonally appropriate bandana. Sometimes I get to walk the dogs. Like on Monday Milford looked at me with those sad eyes and I know he was asking me to take him out. It was about 11 AM and time for his morning constitutional. Little did I know that he just wanted to go for a stroll. We are in an office park with lots of grass and Milf enjoys the cooler days. He walked and walked. He had little concern for the meeting I was missing. Maybe that was it—he was saying. “Max, take a break. Come with me and smell the grass. It is yummy too.” Milford is BEARY wise.
Have you seen Marley and Me? I did and I loved it. It reminds me of so many dogs that I have loved through the years. Speaking of love and dogs. I hope the Obama girls get a dog soon. I know they will love it. I think now they will have lots of help to walk it. I have a doghouse but no dog yet. I want one who doesn’t shed…any ideas for me?
I can’t wait to see Hotel For Dogs. I am going to make my Jack, the Jack Russell and take him with me to the movie. I do that sometimes and people sometimes look at me funny but I know they are just jealous! Especially the ones who are by themselvesJ When I see it, I will let you know what I think.
January is going to be a very fun month. I am even going to the inauguration of President Obama in Washington, DC. I am so excited because I will be witnessing history and also I will get to visit stores in the DC area.
Well, gotta go. Tomorrow is another busy day in the life of a CEB. Stay tuned and thanks for reading!
Hugs,
Maxine and Milf

Dear Maxine, If you want a dog that does not shed, get a poodle! Poodles are hypoallergenic. AND they are brilliant. The most intelligent dog! Alright, border collies ARE ranked no. 1 in intelligence and poodles are ranked second, BUT that must be a typo. Do you know, of all dogs, poodle owners are more likely to get another poodle to replace a poodle than any other breed. That says it all. Poodles are not fancy, schmancy dogs like people think. Not at all. They come in 3 sizes, small, medium, and large. LOL And colors! Lots and lots of colors. There are poodle rescue organizations any place there is a local poodle club. I could go on and on and on. Get a poodle!

Aww! Milford is sooooooo cute! I have a dog too; a Maltese-Poodle mix (maltipoo). I’ve had him for 6 years now, and he is the sweetest thing! BTW, your blog rocks! =)

Not only Democrats are Build-A-Bear customers, you know. In just a few entries of this blog (clearly meant to reach young users of Build-A-Bearville), you’ve already expressed your joy at an Obama-Nation. Way to influence youth to become meda-loving, guillable liberals.

Good point. Not trying to be political in any way. Just trying to speak to public events that are historical and factual. I am a believer in relating business to the real world. Whether you are Republican or Democrat or Independent the fact is Mr. Obama and his family will become the first family in a few weeks. I was not originally an Obama supporter but now that he is our President and the leader of the free world I hope he will help our country get back in the right direction. I have always supported THE President of our country whoever he is. Now wee can help children relate via his children and their lives too.

Milford is a great dog. He made sure we paid him proper attention. That’s one big doggy! Little Mocha was adorable, rolling over for tummy rubs almost immediately, after I shook his paw.
As for a dog that doesn’t shed, I certainly couldn’t suggest any. In my life I’ve had a Husky, an American Eskimo and a German Shepherd (brilliant dog). All three great dogs, but they shed like crazy. Same thing with my cats, now. I wear dark pants all the time, and it’s the worst possible choice with my pets. Between cat hair and playing with furry friends, I have to do a lot of lint brushing! I’d never trade them, though. 🙂 I hope you find the right dog for you.

Milford is very cute! I want a dog but my parents won’t let me get one. My favorite dogs are shi tzu!
January 8, 2009 at 9:17 PM |
Such a cute dog! I am allergic to dogs so I can’t get one. Marley And Me was so sad. 😦 I can’t wait to see Hotel For Dogs either!
I was wondering… who did ChloeRocks get so famous on BABV?

Hi Maxine! Lol! What an adorable pup! Your life sounds like so much fun from what I’ve read the past few days! 🙂
January 8, 2009 at 10:14 PM |
I can’t believe the time is flying by so fast either!! It seems my birthday was only yesterday, or for that matter that I was anticipating Christmas not too long ago! Though, I do want to time to speed up just so I can see a movie that comes out, and I can’t wait any longer for, but then it can rewind back to now. 😛
I just saw the trailer for Hotel for Dogs! Sounds SO cute! And it has Emma Roberts in it, which I do enjoy her acting. 🙂 I’m not sure if I could watch Marley and Me, just because [I heard] the dog dies at the end [?]. I can’t watch any movies where that happens. I know they have to die sometime, but it is just so sad.
How cute! Milf is adorable! I love dogs. Don’t know what I would do without them. 🙂
I think labradoodles don’t shed much. I know they are beary expensive, but they are ADORABLE. I think someone I knew had one because they were allergic to dogs. Though, I did read up on them on wikipedia and I think some of them might shed, but not all that much. Don’t get a black lab mix if you don’t want one that sheds! ROFL! My dog sheds all over the place, and when you have one room with white tile, heh, it doesn’t look so good. But I luff her to death. *snuggles Sophie*
Anyways, that turned into a longer comment than I anticipated. 🙂

Hi Maxine! How about getting a Mini Doxin. Not only are they adorable, but when I had one before, she never shed. But you have to get the short hair kind! Milford is too cute for words. 🙂 Keep up the pawsome blog! I love reading it.
January 9, 2009 at 2:37 AM |
I think you should get a chuwawa because they have very little hairs but I think it still sheds though..but you can’t see it especially if you have a brown chuwawa it sheds but you can’t see it if you have brow or tan carpet And tile.but I think you should really get it because they are very cute and they have a super sense of humor.when you take pics. of them, they look so cute and when you see them you have this feeling like uhhhhhh, that’s so cute!!!!!!anyways, that’s just my opinion

I for one accept your approach to politics here; this is, after all your very own blog. I might balk if things got somehow partisan in BABV, but the “election” of Pawlette (while neither my nor my daughter’s choice) was handled very graciously, I thought. We also appreciate the opportunity for Jr. Cybearguides to vote on the the upcoming sock-hop theme. I do hope that Mr. Obama’s daughters would remain anonymous if they join BABV, for everyone’s sake.
As for your “future poocher,” our family has found boxers to be very energetic & loyal, well-tempered & patient with kids & other pets, and I haven’t ever noticed any major shedding issues. We had a pup once who had a swollen eye, so we named him Rocky, and his female litter-mate was called Adrienne (get it?) We’ll look forward to reading about your choice, and what name you pick, too!

Thank you for the gift Maxine!

It’s on page 5 in the section pink ribbon walk I think and I was walking and I decided to take a picture so I told them let’s take a picture and then I realized why am I there saying smile? Did jao or joa I forgot cybearguide take a picture?

I’m watching the snow fall outside and thinking my son may get his wish of a day off school tomorrow. He is so excited about the new pup coming to BABW that the school-loving child actually wants a day off for once lol.
I love that so many aspects of BABW and now BABV are donation oriented. With the Kennel Pals, the special purple hearts, and the virtual ride donation cards I feel good knowing that the money we spend is not only bringing us cuddles and joy but also helping others. You guys rock 🙂

on thursday i had to take the qualified test since i won my school geo bee. your dog is soooo cute. in the 3rd paragraph you had the word pug, and i was wondering maybe there should be a pug buildabear.
January 9, 2009 at 3:12 PM |
I LOVE that you have dogs in the office!!! One of the best things about starting my own business is that I get to have cats in my office….I have two that love to snuggle up to my laptop because it’s so warm (probably not the best for the computer but I don’t care).
And I would’ve seen Marley and Me but I’m pregnant and hormonal and don’t think I could have lasted without an emotional breakdown. Of course, the night we were deciding, Jim and I went to see “Benjamin Buttons” and I cried from the first 5 min through basically the entire movie. But it was worth it!
January 9, 2009 at 3:29 PM |
I’m not sure but I think there was a pug buildabear and if you broght it to life on babv you get an emoticon

Hi Maxine!
Just thought i’d throw out some non shedding dog ideas for you! i worked at a pet store before i moved up in one of your workshops! Some of the top ones we sold were:
Maltese, Bichon Frise, Morkie (Maltese/Yorkie), Poodle, Havanese, Schnauzers, Coton De Tulear, Silky Terrier, any combination of these will also render a non shedding hybrid.
As for larger dogs there’s the Soft Coated Wheaton (they’re adorable like big fluffy teddy bears!!), Portuguese Water Dog, Bedlington Terrier, Airedale Terriers, and Kerry Blue Terriers.
I hope this helps in your doggie hunt! BTW I LOVE the Jack Russell, we had guest waiting at the door this morning to get it!
January 10, 2009 at 5:24 AM |
I wish there was some way to help create a bearville times, I know alot of people would, like where they choose someone random and ask any ideas and if they are pawsome ideas they put them in the bearville times. To Maxine, I have one tiny itsy bitsy question, Ok How do you and the team pick people for the fashion photos in them bearville times? Just wondering.
January 11, 2009 at 5:55 AM |
We get thousands of photos every week and they are picked randomly I think based on a theme we are looking for.
January 11, 2009 at 7:01 AM |
Hi Maxine!
By the way, I agree with you on the whole “Obama” issue here. I believe that he has the potential to help put this country in the right direction, even if he is misled in some ways.
I love your dog!!!
January 11, 2009 at 3:33 PM |
Hi Max! You might check out a Schnoodle (Schnauzer/Poodle mix). My niece has one and Scarlet is very smart, small and soft. Big Hugs!

Yay for Nina representing the Shih tzu’s at BQ! 🙂
I have a shih tzu, Sammy, & he’s the SECOND shih tzu our families had – AMAZING addition to a family. I would recommend any dogs from a shelter first & foremost because they need a home! 🙂
But shih tzu’s my favorite & ROCK & don’t shed! 😀
Peace Love hugs!!!!
